Programme description
Variations class is where technique meets context. Students at this level have the basics — now comes the work of applying them to actual repertoire, with all the stylistic and interpretive demands that entails. A tendu in a Bournonville variation feels different from one in a Petipa adagio, and this course makes that distinction explicit.
Each eight-week block focuses on two or three variations from the classical canon. Students learn the full choreography, work on musicality and phrasing, and receive individual coaching on how their specific body executes each movement.
Repertoire covered this term
- Giselle Act I variation (Adolphe Adam)
- Paquita variation No. 6
- Sleeping Beauty Fairy of Generosity variation
Video recordings of each session are provided. Students are expected to practise independently between classes — roughly four hours per week outside of scheduled sessions is realistic for meaningful progress.
Coaching by Marisol Fenwick, former principal with the West Australian Ballet and current repetiteur for several state companies.
